Overview
The Emera Oval Facility is one of Halifax’s most recognized recreation landmarks. Located on the Halifax Common, this massive outdoor skating oval was originally built for the 2011 Canada Games and quickly became a year-round public sports venue.
Activities
In winter, the oval transforms into a free public ice-skating rink—one of the largest outdoor refrigerated surfaces in Atlantic Canada. Helmets, skates, and sleds are available for free use, making it highly accessible to everyone. During the summer months, the site converts into a multi-sport area for roller skating, cycling, and community events.
Community Impact
The Emera Oval symbolizes Halifax’s dedication to inclusive, outdoor recreation. It hosts fitness classes, festivals, and learn-to-skate programs, attracting thousands of visitors each year and strengthening the city’s active culture.
